Spa are unable to the double over second placed Newtown losing 3 - 1 away

Droitwich went into this clash against Newtown looking to extend their run of 1 defeat in the last four league matches.

The game started quickly as both sides looked to impose themselves early on. Newtown opened the scoring after ten minutes after Spa had cleared the initial Penalty corner, Newtown followed up with a shot hitting the back boards. Spa struggled to get hold of the ball in the next few minutes conceding possession as they tried to break. Newtown took advantage of this, as they added two goals in a minute; the second coming from a deflection off Pete Prenderville stick and 3rd coming off a Penalty Corner.
Once three behind Spa hit the straps, and pushed Mike Langston centrally; allowing left wing back David Hindle to use his pace to create opportunities for Tommy Ross and Craig Timmis. Criag Timmis reduced the deficit three minutes later with a well taken goal after eliminating the keeper and slotting the ball into an empty goal. Shortly after Spa Timmis had another chance but Newtown keeper smothered the effort.

After half time, Newtown had three excellent opportunities to extend their lead. Firstly a miss kick from Spa Keeper George Robertshaw saw the ball land on the end of the home forward stick but he redeemed himself excellently with a one on one save. A second guilt edge opportunity for Newtown saw their attacker foiled by George standing tall in goal. Next a flowing move from one end of the pitch to the other saw Robertshaw save from close range as the forward seemed certain to score. After this barrage Newtown began to tire and sat deep allowing Spa to press higher up the pitch but found it difficult to make any inroads despite the efforts of Mark Bartle; Matthew Darbyshire and Mike Langston to keep changing the angle of the plays. Spa best chance came from a Matthew Darbyshire cross from the right which found Tommy Ross at the far post just being unable to connect and divert the ball home. For the remainder of the half Droitwich created half chances and opportunities which either the home keeper saved or their was an offence by a Spa player thus releasing the pressure.

Spa entertain Pershore looking to end the season on a high with a push back time of 3pm.
