Lee Wakelam hatrick set Spa on the way to a 5-0 victory

Droitwich Spa Hockey Club Men's Hockey Club began their Summer League Campaign against a very young youthful side who are skilfull and pacey.

Droitwich started the game aggressively pressing Stourport high up the pitch to put them under pressure and think about their passing. This tactic worked as their centre back gave the ball away cheaply allowing Matthew Lee to race through spurning this opportunity. Stourport did not heed the warning as Matthew Lee smashed the ball home after 8 minutes after a quick breakaway. Droitwich doubled their lead a minute later with Lee Wakelam scoring with another firm hard shot into the goal. 12 minutes later Peter Prendiville added the a third as the ball was clipped over the Stourport keeper. Stourport continued to play the ball from side to side but could not find any gaps in Spa defence as Barry Williams marshalled the defence but their pace out side troubled psa left back but could not convert their opening into clear cut chances. Lee Wakleam added a fourth for spa after 25 minutes with a skilfull finish. Spa saw out the remainder of the half depite getting further Penlty chances to extend their advantage

In the second half Stourport cohesiveness improved and caused Spa more problems but there was very little for Spa George Robertshaw to do in goal. As Spa began to tire, mistakes began to creep in as Stourport pace continued to trouble Droitwich midway through the first half as a series of Penalty Corners resulted but the away side failed to keep their shots below the back board and allowing the pressure to be eased on Spa. Droitwich moment of quality came from Lee Wakelam who completed his hatrick with the only strike in the second half to leave the final score 5-0.

Spa head to Bromsgrove for a keenly contested local derby on May 22 2017 to see if they can extend their winning streak
